What is an inlay?

By | Hi-tech Dentistry, Preventative | No Comments

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are used by dentists in order to repair the back teeth that are suffering from mild to moderate decay. They can also be used to repair fractured or cracked teeth that are decaying, but are not damaged enough to warrant a crown.

Inlays and onlays are usually used for patients suffering from enough damage in their oral cavity that the tooth structure cannot be treated using a filling, but have enough healthy tooth remaining that there is no need for a crown. In essence, inlays and onlays can be used for patients suffering from a midlevel of tooth decay. Inlays and onlays allow us to conserve more of the original tooth structure of the patient.

While some people consider inlays and onlays to be more of a cosmetic procedure, this cannot be further from the truth. There are several different types of benefits of using inlays and onlays compared to using metal fillings including:

  • Inlays and onlays help to strengthen the damaged teeth by nearly up to 75 percent. In case of traditional metal fillings, they are known to reduce the strength of the teeth by nearly up to 50 percent.
  • Inlays and onlays are known to prolong the life of the tooth and therefore help to prevent the need for further dental treatment somewhere in the future.
  • Inlays and onlays are known to be more durable as they are made up of hard-wearing and tough materials that are known to last up to 20 years in some cases.

Much like fillings, dental inlays and onlays require local anaesthesia as well. However, this is mainly to remove the old fillings. Basically, inlays and onlays will be used in cases where old fillings are no longer useful and need to be replaced or removed. Much like a filling, dental inlay will fit inside the top edges, or the cusp tips of the teeth, while fitting dental onlays is an extensive procedure that needs to extend over the cusp of the tooth that has been treated.

For both inlays and onlays, once the filling has been removed, we will take an scan of the tooth with our CEREC scanner.  The new Inlay and onlay can be made from this scan and porcelain or composite resin materials can be used in the final restoration. Then, the new Inlay or onlay is cemented into place and it blends with the treated tooth in order to give the patient a more natural and uniform appearance.  For more information on the wide range of dental services at Quirke Dental Surgeons, please contact our friendly team at (051) 421453.

Laser dentistry in Wexford

By | Hi-tech Dentistry | No Comments

Quirke Dental Surgeons has regularly introduced advanced technology to make treatment outcomes better for our patients and a dental laser is one of our most recent acquisitions.

Lasers can be used in a variety of ways in modern dentistry. A laser dentist can use this technology to manipulate soft tissues or eliminate oral bacteria at a treatment site and subsequently sterilize that site. Therefore, lasers are quite versatile in dental treatments.

Lasers can also be used in lieu of scalpels to perform certain gum treatment procedures, such as crown lengthening to remove excess gum tissue that creates the appearance of a “gummy” smile. Lasers can remove diseased gum tissue or eliminate periodontal pockets, as well.

Patients who work with a laser dentist enjoy more comfort throughout the procedure, and they may not need anything stronger than a local anesthetic to tolerate treatments. Some patients may not even need that much. The laser is typically used in conjunction with a gentle spray of water.

Laser dentistry offers a number of other benefits to patients. Lasers tend to allow for more conservative dental treatments that target only the diseased tissue for removal. Therefore, patients who take advantage of laser dentistry may be able to retain more of their healthy tissue.

Furthermore, lasers can give patients the opportunity to avoid invasive interventions and reduce the amount of time spent recovering from procedures. Patients who choose laser dentistry may also have reduced bleeding and swelling since there is less insult to the tissue.

Laser dentistry can improve many patients’ experiences in the dental chair. At your next appointment at our Practice, talk to one of our dentists to learn how this technique may benefit you and if it is appropriate to meet your oral health needs.

Making reviewing our dentists easy

By | Hi-tech Dentistry, Social | No Comments

Nowadays, almost everybody researches almost everything they are about to do on the internet.

Our family-run dental practice receives most of its new patient referrals from our existing patients.

Our existing patients rate our service very highly and we are very proud of this (http://qds.ie/2015/08/exceptional-patient-satisfaction-levels/). We are constantly looking at ways of improving our service and it makes sense if our existing patients can let prospective patients doing online research know what they feel about what we do.

With this in mind, our review ipad, available at reception, is constantly available for our patients to post reviews about us on Google and Facebook. There is a live feed on our testimonials page of the reviews that we receive.

We are grateful for all the brilliant reviews so far and are hopeful that these will help other patients ‘out there’ to discover what it means to be a patient at Quirke Dental Surgeons.

Staying ahead with Clinipad

clinipad

At Quirke Dental Surgeons we endeavour to always deliver the very latest dentistry by using the latest equipment and techniques available to us and this does not exclude our reception area.  In an age when the use of tablets is becoming increasingly popular the practice has introduced the use of our brand new ‘Clinipad’.

The Clinipad allows Quirke Dental Surgeons a big leap ahead in its task to become a ‘paperless practice’. As a patient, the main difference you will notice is that we no longer ask you to fill in a paper Medical History form, instead a few simple clicks and a signature on our tablet computers and all of your details are transferred directly to our records.

For us the Clinipad means a big reduction in the administration time for your dentist, allowing them more time to concentrate further on treating you, the patient.

In trialing the Clinipad at the practice we have found that our patients are enjoying the introduction of the tablet, they find it quick and simple to use and as of yet we have not had the Clinipad returned without a patient commenting on it and smiling. And for that very reason it is a definite hit with us!

As ever, we revolve around the views of our patients and love to hear your feedback about all aspects of the practice. So please let us know what you think of the Clinipad next time you visit Quirke Dental…

Just another of the innovations we have introduced to ensure we are one of the best dental practices in Ireland.

Extended online appointment booking

By | Hi-tech Dentistry | No Comments

If you have followed our blog, or have been a regular visitor to the Practice, you will have seen that we have been consistently developing and using technology to improve our patient service and experience.

We understand the pressures of ongoing lists of ‘things to do’ and the sinking feeling when you realize that you forgot to make that phone call between 9am and 6pm to book your dental health check appointment and that you are going to have to add that to tomorrow’s already too long ‘things to do’ list.

We are pleased to have been able to extend our online appointment booking facilities to both new and existing patients, thus making it easier and convenient to ensure you can attend to your ongoing oral and dental health needs.

This is available by clicking the ‘book an appointment’ button on our home page at www.qds.ie and following the simple process we have designed. Your newly booked appointment will then be confirmed by email or sms message.

We don’t think we could have made the process any easier.

Finding the best dentist with good reviews

By | Diseases, Hi-tech Dentistry, Preventative, Social, Treatment information | No Comments

Most people ask their family, friends and work colleagues for advise when looking for a new dentist.

Personal recommendations like this are how most of our new patients come to us, especially as we already know that over 97.5% of our patients have rated us as excellent or very good in a very large and unique survey we carried out over several months and involving approximately 1000 patients earlier this year.

Now, we have taken the technology we used to gather this information one step further and have worked with another software company to create an in-practice, tablet-based method for patients to rate us and provide a written review. This is such a simple and straightforward method for patients to leave feedback that we are already seeing a very positive reaction to its introduction.

We are making this information available online via the testimonials page on our website, so now you can now see the reviews being left by real patients in real time.

This will help patients who have been unable to get a personal recommendation to decide who are some of the best dentists providing treatment to patients in Wexford, Waterford, Carlow and Kilkenny.

For your convenience, this is a direct link to the reviews.

Exceptional patient satisfaction levels

By | Hi-tech Dentistry | No Comments

We are delighted to report that over 97.5% of patients have reported that their experience with us has been ‘excellent’ or ‘above average’ with many patients coming back to us with extremely complimentary comments. We will continue to strive to maintain, or even increase, these spectacular patient satisfaction results into the future.

But how do we know this? And can we prove it?

Well, yes we can and here’s how.

If you have been a regular patient with us at Quirke Dental Surgeons, you will know that we use a lot of high-tech equipment and methods to ensure we provide you with a high quality service.

What you may not know is the fact that we have been a test site since 2006 for the development of a software package called Exact which is developed by Software of Excellence. Exact is now the most widely used dental software in dental practices throughout Ireland. We have been instrumental in bringing some of the ideas and features of this software to fruition and ensuring that they have the appropriate functionality for general release. In other words, many other dentists have benefited from the work we have carried out.

One of the latest developments which we have been involved in testing is a feature enabling us to follow up appointments with an sms-based survey asking patients how we did during their most recent appointment and being able to collect the responses within the software thus enabling us to generate a printed report. This is the first time that such a statistically significant survey of after-treatment patient feelings has been conducted in dentistry in Ireland. And this is how we are able to prove the 97.5% plus patient rating of ‘excellent’ or ‘above average’ treatment provided by us.

So if you, or a friend or family member, is looking for a dentist in Wexford, Waterford, Carlow or Kilkenny, and you are looking for a dentist who can PROVE a patient satisfaction level of better than 97%, why not give us a call on 051 421453?
