Botulinum Toxin has been used in the medical world for over 20 years and Botulinum Toxin Type A -Azzalure or Botox -is the most widely used and reliable option for treatment of dynamic lines ie wrinkles and has been used in the cosmetic industry for over 10 years.
It is injected into the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles and relaxes them and therefore softens the dynamic lines caused by their continuous movement.
Static lines will not usually respond to treatment as they are in the skin but may improve somewhat over a period of repeated treatments. Effectiveness is dependent on the strength of the muscles injected and individual response.
It therefore may take time to determine the best doses and sites for any one person.
The most commonly treated areas are the forehead, glabella area (frown area between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet. It can also be used to treat bunny lines, smokers lines, gummy smile and chin.
The forehead should always be treated in conjunction with the glabella.
Full effect usually takes up to 2 weeks but there should be a noticeable improvement after 2-3 days and the benefits of treatment last between 3-4 months.
What are anti-wrinkle injections and how do they work ?
They are injections of Botox or Azzalure which are purified proteins derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Their active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, has been used in the medical world for over 20 years. It is one of the most widely used and reliable option for treatment of dynamic lines (ie wrinkles) and has been used cosmetically for more than 10 years.
Tiny amounts are injected with very fine needles into the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles and relaxes them by stopping them from contracting. This results in softening of the dynamic lines caused by their continuous movement. Effectiveness is dependent on the strength of the muscles injected and individual response. It therefore may take time to determine the best doses and sites for any one person.
How soon will I see results?
You should start to see a noticeable improvement after 2-3 days but it will take up to 2 weeks to see the full effects
How long will it last ?
The benefits of treatment last between 3-4 months. Repeat treatments have been shown to provide longer lasting effects. Once the effects have fully worn off the muscle function returns totally and completely to normal.
Are there any side effects or complications?
The most common side effects are headache and reactions at the injection sites such as redness, swelling, irritation, stinging, pain, numbness, itching, bruising, bleeding. Less common side effects can include watery eyes or dry eyes or sometimes visual disturbances. These side effects if they occur are usually mild and very short term.
Some patients may experience a droopy eyelid or eye brow – this is temporary and will wear off as the effects of the treatment fades.
An extremely rare side effect would be muscle weakness away from the site of injection.
